costuming, sci-fi convention!
These are some questions that we often get asked about MomoCon. Please read through and if you have any further questions, Contact Us.
General information and directions
1) What is MomoCon and when does it run?
MomoCon is a multi-genre fan convention encompassing Japanese animation, gaming (video gaming, board and card gaming, Live Action role play gaming), comics and costuming, held every year in March. Specific operating hours are TBA for 2012.
2) Can I bring my kids?
Short answer: yes. Please see our separate Parents Guide.
3) What are the rules/what kind of props can I bring?
The Information section of the website contains all convention policies; please take some time to read them over. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask them in our Forum.
4) Will there be a map of convention grounds and information about events available?
Yes, maps and schedules will be available on the website shortly before the convention and at the convention in our handy-dandy program booklets. Some detailed information about specific events will be available in your registration packet in the form of handouts. Maps from previous conventions are available on the Directions page.
5) Where can I stay for the convention?
Please see the Hotels section of the website. Also, familiarize yourself with the Directions section in relation to your hotel.
Yes, parking details will be added to the website as they are available.
7) Are there places to eat around the convention?
There are numerous restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel (moreso than in previous MomoCon locations). There are several table service and fast food options inside the hotel and attached buildings.
8) How can I get to the convention from the airport?
Grab yourself a seat on a MARTA Northbound line (either line), get off the train at the Peachtree Center station and follow the walking directions from the video (link TBA). You do not need to leave the building to get from the MARTA station to the convention space.
General convention aspects
1) Why is Guest A or Event B not at MomoCon?
While we wish to bring exactly the types of guests that our attendees want to see, sometimes guests are not available/don't do conventions/cost far more than we could hope to afford to bring them. We evaluate each year to bring new and requested guests, so just because you don't see your favorite celebrity this year, request them and we'll see what we can do about the future! Guests are also subject to conflicting schedules, family events, and other conventions that have asked them to attend before MomoCon.
Events at MomoCon need one of three things to get off of the ground: 1) the ability to happen (we have to have the space/capability to put the event on), 2) an enthusiastic staff sponsor, or 3) a reliable outside group that we’ve worked with previously willing to run them. Many events that we receive requests for are outside of our control at our current venue, such as a larger Dealers’ room, and several others have no one willing to run them and no interest from the staff, such as a cosplay skit competition. That is not to say that events are not evaluated each year for feasibility, and they might prove to be an option in the future. We take all suggestions in our forums, so don’t be shy!
2) I am under 16 years old/do not have a form of ID, why do I need a guardian to sign in with me?
MomoCon is held in downtown Atlanta, the heart of a large metropolitan area, and we would not want anything to happen to any of our attendees. Minors are always welcome to attend the convention, but MomoCon is an entertainment event, not a babysitting service. We encourage parents to accompany their kids when at the convention, and suggest that families take some time while in Atlanta to see some of the attractions in the local area (Georgia Aquarium, CCN Center, Zoo Atlanta, etc.). We have no way to verify identity for registration if an attendee does not have a valid, identifiable form of ID, so we ask that attendees without IDs have a friend or parent to sign in with them.
Dealers Room and Artists Alley
1) Why is the Dealers Room/Artists Alley so small?
We are currently utilizing the largest appropriate rooms for both dealers and artists. The vendor areas, however, are only one small part of the event, and we encourage all attendees to take a look at many facets of the convention.
2) Why can’t I find figure A, from series B?
We do not place restrictions on what our dealers bring, other than not allowing blades to be sold on premesis, projectile weapons, and adult material to be sold. We take steps to ensure that many different categories of dealers are represented in our Dealers Room (such as kimono dealers, comics vendors, game companies, several of our guests, etc.), but we do not control WHICH types of items that Dealers choose to bring. Dealers, also, bring things that they know will be sold, and subject themselves to the economics of the convention, not necessarily variety.
Events
1) What kind of events are at MomoCon?
Please see Events for a list and detailed descriptions. Due to cancellations and changes, we can only post a schedule close to convention time, and not all events listed are guaranteed to be at the convention.
2) Where can I get forms for contests?
Please check Contest page for information on all contests and forms. Some events require sign-up on-site, such as the Sidewalk Chalk competition.
3) Do some events have an extra charge?
Yes, sometimes MomoCon hosts workshops that have a charge for materials, and most tournaments have a buy-in to enter, which comprises the pot for prizes. The large majority of events, however, are free to attend, and all extra cost events will be noted.
4) Do events run overnight?
We have a few events that run overnight, the main one being an anime viewing room. There are no adult panels or workshops at MomoCon at any time.
5) Why don’t you show [insert specific anime]?
We choose which anime to screen based on availability, popularity, and quality of the show as deemed by staff. We do not show any US licensed anime without permissions from the company, out of respect for the licensing companies who work to bring anime to the States. If you have a suggestion as to what you’d like to see, please let us know on the forums!
Discipline
1) How do I avoid getting in trouble at MomoCon?
Take a look at our Policies, and you can see what NOT to do at the convention. We work closely with the local authorities, who are on-site in force for all of the convention hours, so repeat or serious offenders to local laws (defacement of property, brandishing approved weapons, sparring in a crowded public setting, to mention a few) will face inquiry from the police. If any convention staff or police feel you are endangering person or property, you will be removed from the grounds, or face other escalating penalties.
2) How can I tell who is a staffer/in charge?
All staffers will have different badges from attendees, larger and laminated. Head staff will have specific MomoCon 2012 staff shirts.
3) Who do I go to if I see someone doing something dangerous?
Find a staffer! Do not try to take matters into your own hands!
